Your Instagram page is not a substitute for a website
Social profiles are rented land. A website is the one place your business fully controls.
I hear a version of the same question often from business owners in Nigeria and beyond: “Do I really need a website if I already have a strong Instagram page?” The honest answer is yes, and the reason has less to do with aesthetics than with control.
You do not own your social following
An algorithm change, a policy update, or a suspended account can cut off access to an audience you spent years building, overnight and without warning. A website you own is not subject to someone else’s platform decisions.
A website works while you sleep, and it is searchable
Social posts fade out of feeds within hours. A well-built website page can keep showing up in search results for months or years, quietly bringing in visitors long after you stopped thinking about it. That compounding effect simply does not exist on social platforms.
It is where trust gets confirmed
Increasingly, a social profile is where someone discovers you, and a website is where they decide to trust you. A clear, professional site with real information, real work, and a straightforward way to get in touch answers the questions a buyer has before they commit, in a way a bio link never fully can.
They work best together
This is not an argument against social media. It is an argument for treating it as a channel that feeds a business you actually own, rather than the whole business itself. Social builds awareness. A website converts that awareness into clients, and keeps working after the post stops getting views.
